I like big bags and I cannot lie. (Are you singing it now?!) Let’s talk about NYC tourist site bag limitations.
I used to go out for my travel days with a backpack filled with ‘just in case’ items but I’ve had to reform my ways. I still carry items that would make MacGyver proud and I show you my tips for what to carry in a small bag in my next post. These days I’d rather be efficient about what I carry than be turned back from visiting a site due to a bag limitation.
When visiting certain tourist sites in New York City, there are restrictions on bringing large bags or backpacks for security reasons. Although it is easiest to limit what you carry, some circumstances may require you to have more stuff. If that is you, it’s essential to be aware of the NYC tourist site bag limitations so you can plan accordingly to ensure a smooth visit. Here are some popular NYC venues where you may encounter bag size limitations:
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
The National Park Service, which oversees the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, has strict security measures in place. Large bags, backpacks, and oversized items are not allowed inside the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island. They offer limited storage facilities for smaller items, but it’s best to leave large bags at your hotel.
One World Observatory
At the One World Trade Center, you may be subject to security screenings similar to those at airports. Large bags and backpacks are not permitted, and there are no storage facilities available. Plan to travel light when visiting the observatory.
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
MoMA has bag limitations, restricting backpacks and large bags. They offer a coat and bag check service, but it’s advisable to travel with smaller bags or backpacks if you plan to visit the museum.
Empire State Building
The Empire State Building has restrictions on large bags and backpacks. They provide a bag-check service for a fee, but it’s more convenient to bring smaller bags or purses when visiting.
Rockefeller Center
The Top of the Rock observation deck at Rockefeller Center is another NYC tourist site with bag limitations. Rockefeller Center has security screenings similar to those at airports. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed, so plan accordingly.
9/11 Museum
The 9/11 Museum is another location where large bags and backpacks are not allowed. There is a bag-check service for a fee, so it’s recommended to travel with smaller bags.
Broadway Theaters
Many Broadway theaters have restrictions on large bags and backpacks so it is recommend to check your specific theater policies.
Radio City Music Hall
At Radio City Music Hall, bags do not have to be clear, but they must fit comfortably under the seat. Oversize bags are prohibited and Radio City Music Hall does not provide an area to check bags, coats or other personal belongings.
Please note that NYC tourist site bag limitations and security policies may change, so it’s a good idea to check the official website of the attraction or venue you plan to visit for the most up-to-date information on bag restrictions.
In general, it’s a good practice to travel with a smaller bag when visiting popular tourist sites to avoid any inconvenience or delays during security screenings. I have a great small bag post filled with tips on what to carry to maximize your efficiency and still have plenty of useful, MacGyver level items on hand as you tour around.
