If you are looking for something a little extra for your 2024 total eclipse travel, there are some ways to experience the 2024 eclipse by air or by sea.
The next total solar eclipse in North America is scheduled for April 8, 2024 and it will be the last total eclipse that North America will experience for another 20 years. My other posts on this experience cover eclipse viewing glasses and travel tips to view the total eclipse by land.
Let’s dive into two other, even more unique, 2024 total eclipse travel options!
By Sea
Holland America is offering a cruise entitled “22-Day Solar Eclipse & Circle Hawaii”. Departing San Diego, CA on April 5th, it is described as “An unforgettable Solar Eclipse cruise featuring rare natural and cosmic wonders, from a solar eclipse viewing off Mexico’s coast to Hawaii’s bubbling Kilauea volcano.” As of this writing, cabins are still available starting from $1,299pp.
By Air
Southwest Airlines has announced flights that are predicted to have the best viewing options for 2024 total eclipse travel and seeing the eclipse from the air. In a statement, David Dillahunt, Chief Meteorologist at Southwest Airlines said “With our flight schedule, we’re able to offer hundreds of seats in the sky to view the eclipse, and we look forward to showcasing our Hospitality on this day while celebrating with our Customers.”
On April 8, 2024, the scheduled Southwest flights listed below have the greatest likelihood of offering Customers onboard the best view of this moment:
- Southwest Flight #1252: departs Dallas (Love Field) at 12:45 p.m. CDT for Pittsburgh
- Southwest Flight #1721: departs Austin at 12:50 p.m. CDT for Indianapolis
- Southwest Flight #1910: departs St. Louis at 1:20 p.m. CDT for Houston (Hobby)
Eye Safety
Regardless of where you are viewing from, eclipse viewing is only safely done with the use of special eclipse glasses.
If you are looking for viewing glasses from a brand verified by the American Astronomical Society, I have a blog post on this and options in my Favorites Things (affiliate links).
Keep in Touch & Follow Along
We will be viewing the eclipse from the path of totality in Texas but I love the idea of seeing it by air or sea. If you take one of these flights or the cruise, I’d love to hear about your experience!
I’ll be sharing more of our travels and our experience in the ‘path of totality’. Follow me on Instagram and subscribe to the blog to come along.
Adventure on!
